Can Obama Stop the War on Science?
by Paul Waldman, Jan 12, 2010
Paul Waldman discusses how the Republicans under Bush waged a war on science for eight years, from embryonic stem cell research to climate change to abstinence for birth control, all dilusional falsehoods. But perhaps most astounding is their view of evolution. Some extracts from his paper:
"According to a 2008 Gallup poll, 60 percent of Republicans agreed that "God created humans as is within the last 10,000 years" (the number for Democrats was 38 percent).
"If you believe that, you have to believe the entire scientific community is engaged in a hoax that spans the globe, includes thousands of co-conspirators, and has been going on for decades.
"There is no major political party in Europe or Japan," the authors observed, "that uses opposition to evolution as part of its political platform."
I just don't understand how a majority of Republicans can dismiss evolution so easily, or for that matter many of the other findings by scientists. It would seem "pride in ignorance" has become an identifying label of the party. I know that's not true for so many of my Republican friends so why do they continue to support creationism over evolution? Have they, as well as some Democrats, just blocked out of their minds the truth because it is so uncomfortable?
